International English Language Day, World Book Day, National British Tea Day: festive days at ISTU

in Тра 02, 2025

Every year on April 23rd, people around the world celebrate International English Language Day. This date is special because it’s also the birthday of William Shakespeare, one of the greatest writers in history. English Language Day was created by the United Nations to honor the importance of English as a global language of communication, business, education, and culture.

Shakespeare’s Influence on English
William Shakespeare is often called the “father of modern English.” He added over 1,700 new words and expressions to the language, many of which we still use today – like break the ice, heart of gold, and wild-goose chase. His plays and poems have influenced not just literature, but also the way people speak and write English all over the world.

National Tea Day
Also on April 21st, the UK celebrates National Tea Day, a tradition close to British hearts. Drinking tea is one of the most famous symbols of British culture, and it often appears in English expressions like not my cup of tea, spill the tea, not for all tea in China. This day reminds people to enjoy a good cup of tea, relax, and appreciate simple pleasures.

World Book Day
World Book Day is another important event, celebrated in many countries on April 23rd. It promotes reading, publishing, and the protection of authors’ rights. It’s a great opportunity for students and book lovers to discover new stories, classic novels, and famous writers like Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Jane Austen.

English and the Ukrainian Language
The English language influences many other languages, including Ukrainian. In recent years, more and more English words have entered Ukrainian vocabulary, especially in areas like technology, fashion, business, and social media. Words like комп’ютер, менеджер, стартап, дедлайн, скіл, апдейт, оверсайз, шерити, фейк, пруф, чилити, клікати, лайкати are examples of this exchange. English has become a language of global opportunity, helping young people connect with the world and explore new ideas.
